Esteghlal Iran Football Club, also known as Esteghlal, Esteghlal Tehran, and Esteghlal Iran, is a professional football club in Iran that was founded on October 25, 1945 in Tehran. Before the 1979 revolution, the club was initially called Cyclists and then Taj. Esteghlal is considered one of the most successful clubs in Iranian football history, having won 38 official championship titles in continental, national, and provincial cups (the highest level).
Esteghlal is known as one ofthe oldest and most ancient football clubs in Iran. They play their home games at Azadi Stadium in western Tehran. The club currently competes in the Iranian Premier League and the Iranian Cup, and is the oldest team in both cups. Esteghlal's main rivals in these two cups are Persepolis from Tehran and Sepahan from Isfahan.
